  • They're baaaaaack:  High School Students, that is - Just noticed today t"They're baacckk!" hat we have several high school students in Fenwick Library and they all have different type of assignments which leads me to believe that they're from different classes/schools. One student told me her teacher assigned the class to find and list 30 primary resources.

  • 2007 GIS Day, Nov. 14: Please join us for our "GIS open house" event in government documents and reference area starting 10:00 am tomorrow. • UPDATE: There is a copy of the Merck Index on the CDRom Research Station next to the water fountain. (10.2.2007/jwc) The current Merck Index is missing. Johnson Center Library Reference has a current copy according to the catalog. Last night I found the JCL copy on the second floor outside the JCL instruction room and delievered to the JCL Ref Desk. (10/2/2007SS) This is annoying since I just rush ordered the last newest one and we just got it a couple weeks ago. I will ask DB to order rush replacment; once received, let's lock it in the phone drawer and take an ID to use. (10/2/2007/jwc)

  • Can graduate research assistants check out books on their professor's card for the professor? YES. There is a proxy form at Circulation that BOTH parties (GRA and Faculty) complete and sign. Circ retains the form. There are a few proxy forms in the drawer by the "front" computer at the desk (the drawer with the pens in it). You can give the form, but the form needs to be returned to CIRC. (9.12.07/jwc)

    •

  • I'm back!!! My presentation on technology in libraries went well. I had 28 attendees, mostly from university libraries, but there were also school and special librarians. Attendees were all from San Salvador, for the exception of one person who came from Santa Ana, which is about an hour West of San Salvador. Due to high security, the presentation was held outside the U.S. Embassy in a school. The presentation was limited to two attendees per institution due to space limitations. The topic was "technology in libraries" and ran from 9am - 4pm. We covered: IM reference, Wikis, Blogs, Zotero, Social Bookmarking, and Social Networking. Here's a picture, note the iMasonLibraries PowerPoint presentation that I gave at the Liaison brown bag. (4.19.2007/ma)

Some are new to the library and not familiar with the difference between LC and Dewey call numbers, so you may want to remind them before they head to the shelves for books! Thanks! CCH 3/26/07

  • Pre-1987 Bound Journals – Moving from Fenwick to Arlington: Currently, pre-1983 Fenwick bound journals are housed at the Arlington campus library. Due to space constraints in the Fenwick Periodicals/Microforms area, we will now be moving all pre-1987 Fenwick bound journal volumes to Arlington. Approximately 11,500 bound journal volumes will be moved. The move will begin on March 26, 2007. Periodicals staff will oversee the move of an average of five bins of bound volumes per day from Fenwick to the Arlington campus library. Serials has its own bins for this project. The campus courier will be delivering the bins as part of normal campus deliveries. Approximately 75 volumes will be moved per day; 375 volumes per week. At that rate, this project is slated to be completed in mid-October. Location changes in holdings records in the catalog will be made each day as volumes are moved. The Serials and Periodicals/Microforms department has a detailed list of every title and volume that will be moved. If you have any questions about this project or need more information, please contact Bridget Miller, Head, Serials and Periodicals/Microforms at 3-2204. (This is Bridget's e-mail. 3.23.2007/jwc)

  • BlackBoard Problem
  • From one of my professors in Instructional Design: "Several people have reported problems with Blackboard's discussion forum interface when using Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista. The only solution that I am aware of at this time is to use another browser, such as Firefox (www.mozilla.com) or Opera (www.opera.com). Both of these browsers are available for free." If this is happening in Blackboard it may start happening in WebCT. (03.9.07/Sarah)

  • Women Legislators:
  • Ref. question regarding a state-by state list of women serving in state legislative from 1960-1975. Since this was a tough question, I want to share with you what I found. (02.28.07/Joy). Note: I am ordering this book rush for FenRef. (2.28.2007/jwc)
